Title: Ray Bradbury
Post by: Lurker on June 07, 2012, 04:30:56 PM
Greetings, friends!

Two days ago (5th of June, 2012), the great writer Ray Bradbury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Bradbury) died at the age of 91.

I humbly suggest celebrating his work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Bradbury_bibliography) by dedicating a future contest to his memory.

Peace,
Lurker.

I think a "Based on Science-fiction Literature" theme or something similar might be little better, just for people not familiar with his works.

That said, I think "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is just ripe with capping ideas. Great suggestion! [approve]

Could give new meaning to the title "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".

I would like to point out that categorizing Bradbury as a Science Fiction writer does the man a disservice.  Granted, his most famous works are SF (The Martian Chronicles; Fahrenheit 451), but he also wrote mystery (Death Is a Lonely Business), horror (Something Wicked This Way Comes), Fantasy (From the Dust Returned), "regular" fiction (Green Shadows, White Whale), what I can only call cross-genre (Dandelion Wine), children and "young adult" literature (The Halloween Tree) and non-fiction (Zen in the Art of Writing).  I would also venture to say that, contests notwithstanding, those who are not familiar with his works are missing out.

Could give new meaning to the title "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".

That's Heinlein, not Bradbury.  Distinct authors with very different styles.

And speaking of Heinlein's works, I believe that many Havenites will find the the premise of his "I Will Fear No Evil" more to their linking.  Personally though, I thought the novel was tedious and would recommend the atypical "Glory Road" instead.

Yes, I am a nerd.

Peace,
Lurker.

That was dumb of me. I was trying to think of a way to broaden the idea slightly, and that's what seemed most apt. I should know better; the same thing often happens to one of my favorite authors (Harlan Ellison).

Not only are his works full of hooks for our purposes, some of them actually contain TG. Shannon made a cap based on my personal favorite, All You Zombies (http://www.rachelshaven.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=40&topic=41826.0).

Ellison is a staple of speculative fiction but I don't believe he had a Hugo-nominated song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1IxOS4VzKM) composed in his honuor...

That was the reason I mentioned "I Will Fear No Evil".  It's a TG bonanza.

Dang.  Well, if I confuse Bradbury with anyone, Heinlein isn't bad.  Sure, he was a rabid right-winger, but he turned in his first draft and most times it was near-publishable.

I disagree.

To categorize Bradbury as 'just' a science fiction writer would have been wrong but as he is best known for his sci-fi work and TG is basically that, I think the comment was a valid one. It was also a good idea to broaden the contest idea and I believe Lurker is wrong to say that if you're not familiar with his works then you should be.

As much as I like Joss Whedon and the contest we had last year, that could have benefited from a broader scope.

Agreed, I can see this easily becoming like the Whedon contest and being too limited into attract a great many captioners.
