That's true. I did spend some time thinking about who/what she was and what the deal was but it didn't help the story... If you're really curious...
Initially I conceived the idea of the girl as a spirit. The spirit can live without a human host but only for a few months so she needs to find someone to join with. She gets to have a prolonged life and see what comes in the future and of course you get to look like a hot chick. Their was suppose to be a cost of you losing about five years of your life and technically she would be there with you but she was mostly content to sit back and watch unless you did something crazy (like take drugs or try to murder someone or something)
